Next Million-Euro Transfer: Bayern Sells Asp Jensen to Deportivo

FC Bayern has generated its next million-euro transfer fee this summer: Jonathan Asp Jensen, who played just one Bundesliga match for Munich, is making a permanent move to Spain.

Bayern had already finalized the sales of Alexander Nübel (to Besiktas) and Jonah Kusi-Asare (on a permanent transfer to Fulham) this summer. Now Jonathan Asp Jensen’s transfer is added to the list—and it brings in another million-euro sum. According to consistent media reports, the transfer fee is said to be around seven million euros.

Yet the talented Danish midfielder has played just one Bundesliga match for the record champions since his transfer in the summer of 2022: Asp Jensen made his professional debut in the 90th minute of the 2-0 win over Wolfsburg on Matchday 33 of the 2023-24 season. However, it was not to be the start of a long career, but rather his only competitive match for the first team.

Contract with Deportivo is a “well-deserved reward”

“Since his arrival at the campus, he has worked with great ambition toward his path to professional soccer and has steadily improved in our youth teams. With a strong debut season in the Swiss top flight, he has taken the next important step,” says Bayern’s Director of Youth Development, Jochen Sauer, praising the Dane nonetheless. “It’s a well-deserved reward that he’s now joining a club in the Spanish top flight, where he can prove himself at the highest level. We’ll continue to follow his development.”

Last season, Bayern loaned Asp Jensen to Grasshopper Club Zurich—a perfect solution for all sides, as it quickly turned out. As early as December, coach Gerald Scheiblehner was raving about the “game-changer,” who was directly involved in 15 goals (nine goals, six assists) in a total of 40 competitive matches for the Swiss club.

Several interested clubs are said to have come forward as a result. La Liga newcomer Deportivo A Coruna, which recently changed its name, worked the hardest on the deal—and has now secured the transfer. So Asp Jensen may find himself facing off against Kylian Mbappé and company in the future, though the league opener on the weekend of August 15 will be “only” against FC Elche. There are still plenty of highlights to come—at least on paper: In October, they’ll travel to Atlético Madrid, and in November and December, the league newcomer will host champions Barcelona and runners-up Real Madrid.
