New number one in women’s tennis

Things are happening at the top of the world rankings. A French Open winner is now enthroned at the top – at only 20 years of age. Angelique Kerber remains the best German

Poland’s Iga Swiatek is now officially the new number one in the tennis world rankings. The 20-year-old succeeds Australian Ashleigh Barty, who surprisingly announced her retirement from professional tennis. The former French Open winner Swiatek won the tournament in Miami last weekend and had already been confirmed as Barty’s successor.

The Czech Barbora Krejcikova follows in second place in the new rankings published on Monday, ahead of the Spaniard Paula Badosa. The best German in 16th place is former world number one Angelique Kerber.

In the men’s singles, Alexander Zverev from Hamburg is ranked third behind Serbian Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev. The Russian had missed the return to the top at the tournament in Miami. Medvedev then had surgery for a small hernia and now has to take a break for one to two months.
