NBA Stars Giving Something Back: Derrick Rose Offering $400,000 Scholarship

Following on from LeBron James opening his ‘I PROMISE’ school, offering a second chance to those students who have fallen behind academically, Derrick Rose has stepped up with his own great scholarship program.

The Rose Scholars

His program called ‘The Rose Scholars’ is aimed at giving students a pathway to college that is not available to them if they do not have the funds to do so. Rose released a statement that showed insight into his thoughts behind the program:

Derrick Rose Offering $400,00 Scholarship

“Investing in school-age youth has long been a passion of mine, and I am proud to continue to help children pursue higher education as a means to better themselves and their communities.”

What students need to do to apply

Students looking to benefit from Rose’s great gesture are asked to send a 600-word essay as part of the application and it also calls for applicants to be “civic-minded and demonstrate a willingness to lead”, a clear link between the typical characteristics of great sports stars.

The top scholarship prize is $200,000 over instalments each semester, whilst there are also prizes of $20,000 one-off payments to the applicants coming second and third.

More great deeds from sports stars

Rose is a sports star that has shown great generosity and dedication to helping communities before. In 2014 he donated $1 million to an apprenticeship program called After School Matters.

Rose’s latest charitable act is another great example of how sports stars are making important changes, using their finance and their profile to great effect. Hopefully, the news regarding both Rose and James’ great work will encourage more from the sports industry to help their communities in similar ways.
