National player Voigtmann moves to Milan

National basketball player Johannes Voigtmann will play for the Italian top club Olimpia Milan in the future. The Euroleague team announced the signing of the 29-year-old centre for two seasons on Friday.

The native of Thuringia, who is currently on duty with the German Basketball Association (DBB) at the European Championships, last played for ZSKA Moscow for almost three years. After the Russian attack on Ukraine, Voigtmann left the country and made it clear that he would not return despite a contract until 2023.

“I am happy to be at such a prestigious club and in a team with big goals,” the professional was quoted as saying on the Italian club’s website. Prior to the deal with Olimpia, Voigtmann was given the all clear from Moscow, Italian news agency Ansa reported, citing club sources. Milan is the reigning champion in Italy and a candidate for the Euroleague title – Olimpia reached the semi-finals of the European premier league in 2021.
