Murray Wimbledon significant even without world ranking points

London – For British tennis star Andy Murray, the grass-court classic at Wimbledon remains valuable even without the awarding of points for the world rankings.

He said he was a big golf and football fan, but had no idea how many points there were for winning the Masters in golf or the World Cup in football. “But I can tell you exactly who won the World Cup or Masters,” Murray wrote on Twitter.

He added that spectators at Wimbledon would certainly have no idea either, nor would they be interested in how many points a player gets for winning in the third round. “But I guarantee they will remember who wins. Wimbledon will never be a show match and will never feel like a show match. The end,” Murray wrote.

The ATP and WTA tennis organisations had decided last Friday not to award world ranking points at Wimbledon this year. The reason for this is the exclusion of professionals from Russia and Belarus because of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine. As a result, during the current French Open in Paris, some professionals had indicated that they might not want to play Wimbledon this year.
