Moto2 out for Romano Fenati: Speed-Up brings in Alonso Lopez as replacement

Due to disappointing results, Speed-Up has parted company with Romano Fenati with immediate effect – Alonso Lopez is already testing as a replacement in Barcelona

It had already become apparent during the course of the last race weekend in Jerez. Now the separation of Romano Fenati and the team of Luca Boscoscuro in Moto2 is fixed. On Wednesday, the team confirmed the termination of the contract with immediate effect. From Le Mans onwards, Alonso Lopez will join the team.

Fenati’s start to the season has not been easy. While his clearly inexperienced teammate Fermin Aldeguer showed promising pace most of the time in the first six races and scored two top-10 finishes, Fenati often struggled to even get into the points. His best result was an eleventh place.

Luca Boscoscuro made no secret of his displeasure about the disappointing results. The crash in the race in Jerez was the final straw. Wednesday’s announcement was short and sweet: “The SpeedUp Team announces the termination of the contract with the rider Romano Fenati.

Team boss: It’s the speed, not the behaviour

“The decision was taken after the race in Jerez, where Romano did the same time as in the pre-season tests, since then he has not made any progress. We spoke calmly and came to the conclusion that it was best to stop.”

Fenati’s reputation as a troublemaker had nothing to do with the sacking, the team boss further stressed. “Romano’s departure is due to a sporting problem, his conduct during his time with us was impeccable. He behaved very professionally, it was not a problem, it was a matter of speed. “

2016 Fenati lost his place in the VR46 team in Moto3 after repeatedly defying instructions. In 2018, he was kicked out of Moto2 for grabbing Stefano Manzi’s handlebars and applying the brakes during the San Marino Grand Prix. He was subsequently suspended for two races.

Substitute Lopez is already testing in Barcelona

2020 Fenati returned to Moto3 full time and rode for Max Biaggi’s team, with whom he celebrated two victories and finished on the podium a total of five times. After the premature end at Speed-Up, the future of the Italian is uncertain. At the test in Barcelona, his machine will already be piloted by Lopez.

The Spaniard comes from Speed-Up’s own squad. 2021 competed in the European Moto2 Championship on a Boscoscuro bike and finished second overall behind Aldeguer. In addition, he also rode four races in Moto2. From 2018 to 2020, he was a regular rider in Moto3. His best race result was with Honda at the 2019 Thai Grand Prix, where he finished third.

“Alonso, who has just spent four months at home, was fast from the start, he is on the same level as Aldeguer,” Luca Boscoscuro explained after the first day of testing. “He will be there at Le Mans. In two or three races we will see where we are. I’m not interested in where he comes from, but where he arrives. “
