Liverpool FC is apparently intensifying its search for a striker—and is prepared to dig deep into its pockets once again. The pursuit of Alexander Isak could also affect Eintracht Frankfurt.
Alexander Isak was once unlucky at Borussia Dortmund, but now he could set a new transfer record in the Premier League. There is still a long way to go, but Liverpool FC seems ready to take the plunge.
As reported by The Athletic on Tuesday, the Reds have registered their interest in Isak with Newcastle United. The 25-year-old Swede has developed into one of the league’s best strikers in recent years (86 games, 54 goals) and is therefore a logical target for the English champions, who are looking to sign a new center forward this summer.
However, the Magpies have declared Isak unsellable and would probably have to be swayed by an immoral offer, if that were even possible. According to the report, the Reds are prepared to fork out around £120 million (approx. €138 million), which would break their own England record they just set: Florian Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a fixed fee of around €125 million.
Even before the tragic death of Diogo Jota, Liverpool officials had been looking to strengthen their center forward position, as Darwin had not developed into the striker they had hoped for in three years (95 league games, 25 goals). The 26-year-old Uruguayan is facing an early departure. Federico Chiesa, who played there in the first friendly, is considered a candidate for the number nine spot, but is unlikely to be first choice in his second year under coach Arne Slot.
Liverpool’s search for a striker could also benefit Eintracht
If Newcastle remains firm on Isak, who is under contract until 2028, the Reds could enter the poker game for Hugo Ekitiké, according to reports. The Magpies are said to have made an initial offer to Eintracht Frankfurt for the 23-year-old. Newcastle is therefore facing a dilemma: sell Isak or face new competition for Ekitiké. Either option would suit SGE: either a second wealthy Premier League club makes an offer, or Newcastle is under even more pressure – and considerably richer.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Luis Diaz will open up another gap in the Reds’ offense, which they would like to avoid. According to The Athletic, Bayern Munich has been rebuffed with an initial offer for the winger, who is said to be open to a move.
