Ministry of Sport appoints new Cameroon coach – association irritated

Cameroon has a new national coach. Belgian Marc Brys is now in charge of the “Indomitable Lions”. The curious thing is that the Cameroon soccer association claims to have known nothing about it

In Cameroon, a not exactly unimportant and therefore all the more curious announcement made the rounds on Wednesday: Marc Brys (61) is now in charge of the “Indomitable Lions” national team. All the more interesting is how this came about.

The Belgian’s appointment as national team coach was announced on the television news – by the country’s Ministry of Sport. The Cameroonian soccer association “Fecafoot” reacted with irritation and claims to have known nothing about the decision

After TV news: “Great astonishment” at the association

In a public statement following the announcement of Brys’ appointment, the association expressed “great astonishment” at the procedure. There had apparently been no prior agreements regarding the appointment to the post.

Brys, who has hardly any African experience to date – he has only worked as a coach in Belgium for K. Sint-Truidense VV and OH Leuven – is now to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup. The Belgian succeeds former Cologne professional Rigobert Song in Cameroon, whose contract expired in February.

Brys should not only lead the team to the 2026 World Cup

The 47-year-old former professional Song (16 Bundesliga appearances) had disappointed with his home country at the Africa Cup, where Cameroon were eliminated in the round of 16 against Nigeria after a 2-0 defeat – although the aim was to reach at least the semi-finals. In general, the Cameroonians celebrated just six wins in 23 games (nine defeats, eight draws) during Song’s two-year tenure. This is set to change from now on under Brys
