Millions for German eFootball from DFL investor?

The DFL is allowed to negotiate with potential investors after the vote of all Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs. A deal could also have an impact on the Virtual Bundesliga (VBL) – of a financial nature

The vote at the general meeting on Monday could not have been closer: 24 clubs voted yes to the question of whether the DFL should be allowed to negotiate with potential investors. This corresponds exactly to the two-thirds majority required for a decision among the 36 clubs in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2. The DFL is therefore allowed to look for an investor – which could also have consequences for the VBL.

The eFootball League has been the “third competitive brand in the DFL’s statutes, preamble and licensing regulations” since 2022. In the current 2023/24 season, participation in the VBL Club Championship is also mandatory. Virtual soccer is part of the DFL’s digitalization strategy. For this reason, the VBL will probably also be provided with a small item in the distribution of funds following a possible investor deal.

Acclaimed eight million – but for what?

900 million to one billion euros is what the DFL is set to receive from the planned investment. Of this, 600 million is earmarked for the cornerstones of digitalization and internationalization. According to “Sportschau”, the VBL will get its slice of the cake. The program reports on its website that it has received an “internal investment plan from the DFL”.

According to the plan, eight million euros are earmarked for the eFootball competition. As the investor payment is to be spread over several years, this could also apply to the funds for the VBL. However, the plans to redistribute the potential financial resources have not been officially confirmed.

How could these rumored eight million euros – a considerable sum by eSports standards in this country – advance the Virtual Bundesliga? Investments in the live broadcast of the eFootball league, which is not always popular with viewers, are possible. Marketing could also benefit from a deal. Higher prize money for clubs and players could also be an option.
