Mike Krack: Liberty has taken Formula One to a new level

Aston Martin’s new team boss Mike Krack compares Formula One then and now and praises above all the development since the takeover by Liberty Media

With Mike Krack, an old acquaintance returns to the premier class this Formula 1 season. In the early 2000s, the Luxembourger began his Formula 1 career as a data engineer at BMW-Sauber, later rising to become chief engineer. Now he is returning to the sport as team boss of Aston Martin.

During the years Krack spent in other racing series, Formula One has naturally evolved – and in the right direction, the 49-year-old believes. “I think it’s very positive what has happened with Liberty,” he holds.

“Because when you see how the fan base and the spectator numbers have increased over the past few years, it’s just incredible. And I think that’s largely to the credit of Liberty,” praising the work of the new owners since 2017.

“If I compare it to Formula 1 when I left it, to be honest it’s not comparable because it’s developed so much here. I mean, a year is a lot in Formula 1. If you look at old Grands Prix from 2009-2010, it’s not just the cars that seem old-fashioned, it’s the whole system.”

Measured against that, Liberty has “already done great things”, Krack thinks, and expects more in the future. “Yes, it’s more show-oriented. But I think that’s what the viewer wants. And from that point of view, I think they’re doing a fantastic job, to be honest. “
