Sergio Ramos is back. The 38-year-old has signed a contract with Mexican club CF Monterrey.
Not much had been heard from Sergio Ramos. In the summer, the decorated defender left Sevilla FC after just one year, even though his home club had offered him a lifetime contract. Ramos rejected a contract extension for “personal and family reasons” and, at the age of 38, went club-hunting again.
Many had expected him to move to the USA, and Ramos did not rule out a move to the MLS. But nothing happened at first – until Monterrey came into play as a new club for the first time at the end of January: the president of the Mexican first division club, Antonio Noriega, confirmed on ESPN that “negotiations are underway” but that a final agreement is still missing.
On Monday, the player and the club got down to business. In the presence of a Mexican delegation, Ramos underwent a medical check at the Olympia Quiron Salud clinic, and Marca published a video of his visit.
Ramos will play under Demichelis
As Monterrey announced on Thursday, the contract has now been signed. The club, coached by Martin Demichelis and also featuring Ramos’ former Sevilla teammate Oliver Torres and former Spanish international Sergio Canales, is currently in tenth place with six points from five games, with the season in Mexico not starting until mid-January.
Ramos’ sporting career is studded with major titles. He won the World Cup and the European Championship with Spain, and the former captain shaped an era at Real Madrid. Five league titles and four Champions League victories are among his achievements, and he was also involved in two league titles with PSG.
