Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn put on a boxing spectacle in London. They continue their fathers’ feud.
Boxing fans in the UK had to wait a long time for this showdown, but it was worth the wait! On Saturday night, Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn fought an epic grudge match in front of 65,000 frenetic fans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. After 12 exciting rounds, the three judges unanimously scored the fight 116-112 in favor of Eubank Jr. It was Benn’s first defeat in his 24th fight.
There was no title at stake. Nevertheless, the boxing world watched London with bated breath. Specialist websites such as Boxen1 celebrated the duel afterwards as one that “will remain in the memories of boxing fans for a long time to come” and dubbed it “Fight of the Year.”
Eubank Jr. and Benn with “Fight of the Year”?
This was mainly due to the offensive tactics of the two stars. Neither held back. In the fourth round, it almost came to a physical confrontation. After an uppercut from Eubank Jr., trash talk ensued. The referee had to intervene and warned both for punches after the interruption.
In the twelfth round, both rivals fought a wild battle with their last ounce of strength, finally turning the ring into a cauldron.
The continuation of their fathers’ feud did not disappoint. Thirty-two years ago, former WBO world champion Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn stood in the ring.
The feud has apparently been passed on to the next generation. This became clear a few weeks ago when Eubank Jr. smashed an egg on his opponent’s head at a press conference.
It was a huge provocation. Benn was banned in 2022 shortly before the actual fight against Eubank Jr. after two positive doping tests. In 2023, the World Boxing Council (WBC) cleared him. Benn had attributed the elevated levels to increased egg consumption. The WBC ruled that it was a “plausible explanation.”
The fight was postponed — and has now become a big show.
