The world number six got the better of his Russian compatriot Rublev in the final to claim his 24th career title on the Tour.
On his way back to the very top of the world rankings, professional tennis player Daniil Medvedev has celebrated a major victory by winning the ATP tournament in Hangzhou, China. In a clash between the number one and two seeds, Medvedev defeated his Russian compatriot Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4. In Hangzhou, the 30-year-old Medvedev dropped just one set.
Reaching the final meant the former world number one was already assured of success. With a total of 38 ATP Tour finals appearances in his career, he has moved up to tenth place in the all-time rankings led by Roger Federer. He had already won two ATP tournaments earlier this year. He triumphed in Brisbane and Dubai, bringing his total to 24 victories.
In his latest triumph in China, Medvedev saved three break points against his final opponent Rublev and, after 1 hour and 43 minutes, converted his second match point, thereby pocketing $1,039,090. Medvedev’s greatest success to date – his victory at the US Open – now lies five years in the past. At this year’s tournament in New York, he reached the round of 16.
