Mbappé: praise and a challenge to Bayern

Kylian Mbappé is currently on tour with France in the US, but the 27-year-old is already thinking about his upcoming club duties – and FC Bayern Munich. He was also keen to allay Spanish fears.

Kylian Mbappé has not featured in Real Madrid’s starting eleven since February 21 and the 2-1 defeat at Osasuna. An injury to his left knee, which he suffered in the 2-0 home defeat against Celta Vigo in December, had caused him problems and frustration. He only returned in mid-March and came on as a substitute in the 3-2 derby win against Atletico. Now, however, he wants to get back on track with the Whites and he also made an effort to dispel Spanish fears.

“I know that people in Spain are worried about everything. Some people think I won’t play for Real again and will go straight to the World Cup instead,“ he told Telefoot, stressing: ”The best way to prepare well for the World Cup is to win everything with Real Madrid beforehand.”

“If anyone can stop Bayern, it’s Real”

Real can still win the league and Champions League double, but in the league they are already four points behind arch-rivals FC Barcelona and in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, FC Bayern Munich are probably the toughest task imaginable. “Two big games await us against a team that I think is the best in Europe at the moment,” said Mbappé, praising the German record champions, but also expressing his determination: “But if anyone can stop FC Bayern, it’s Real Madrid.”

With 23 goals, Mbappé is not only Real’s top scorer, he also leads the scoring statistics in La Liga ahead of Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi (18) and Osasuna’s Ante Budimir (14). Nevertheless, the Frenchman is not free from criticism, a fact that does not bother him. “I understand that Real is like a religion for a lot of people in Spain. Our fans are very passionate, there’s a lot of talk, a lot of speculation – sometimes justified, sometimes not,“ said Mbappé: ”I’ve realized that you have to learn to deal with criticism when you play for such a big club. Because everyone has been criticized at some point, even the biggest stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane or Alfredo Di Stefano. Why should I be exempt?”
