After a good start, the Warstein native is out of the Masters.
German tennis pro Jan-Lennard Struff has been knocked out of the ATP Masters in Madrid. The Warsteiner lost to favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece on Saturday in the second round after a good start, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6.
The 35-year-old Struff had ended his losing streak on the tennis tour at the start of the tournament in Spain after his opponent Botic van de Zandschulp retired with the score at 7-5, 2-6, 4-1 in favor of the German. It was Struff’s first victory since mid-February, but it wasn’t enough for the next one.
Struff actually feels at home in Madrid. In 2023, he achieved one of the best results of his career by reaching the final of the Masters, and last year he reached the round of 16.
Unlike Struff, Alexander Zverev is in the third round of the high-class tournament. The Tokyo Olympic champion won his opening match confidently 6-2, 6-2 against Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut. The Hamburg native will face his compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Sunday.
