He wasn’t happy at FC Bayern, and now he’s already gone. It has been officially confirmed that Nestory Irankunda is moving to FC Watford.
Nestory Irankunda joined Munich in 2024/25 for €900,000, but was unable to make the grade with the first team. Instead, the Australian played in the Bavarian regional league (15 games, four goals) and made three appearances in the Youth League (one goal). In the winter, the 19-year-old was loaned to Grasshopper Club Zurich in Switzerland (21 games, 1 goal, 3 assists).
Irankunda feels at home on the right wing and in attacking midfield, but his sporting prospects at Säbener Straße were very slim after his return. And because the national team player did not want to significantly reduce his chances of playing in the 2026 World Cup, he decided to move to England.
In Munich, people are very confident that the talented player will be able to establish himself at the ambitious second division club northwest of London. “Nestory has repeatedly demonstrated his great potential with our amateurs and then at GC in Zurich. With his athleticism and speed, he is perfect for soccer on the island,” said Jochen Sauer in a club statement, adding: “We will continue to keep a close eye on him there.”
Long-term contract in Watford
Irankunda signed a five-year contract with the Hornets. “Nestory can be a very special player and we believe he can fulfill his potential with us,” said sporting director Gian Luca Nani, delighted with the new signing, who fits the profile they were looking for.
No details were given about the transfer fee. According to reports in other media outlets, Bayern will receive around three million euros for the Australian, and the Munich club is also said to have secured a buy-back option and a 50 percent stake in the event of a resale.
