Lewis Hamilton: Why Mercedes shouldn’t switch to 2023 yet

Despite his weakest start to the season since 2009 and 75 points behind World Championship leader Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton isn’t thinking about the 2023 season just yet

With 50 points from the first seven races of the 2022 Formula One season, Lewis Hamilton has made his worst start to a season since 2009. Already 75 points behind leader Max Verstappen, it seems the world championship train has already sailed for the Briton.

Thus, the question arises whether the Mercedes team might be better advised to focus only on the development of next year’s car, especially in light of the budget cap.

Hamilton, however, disagrees when asked about this question at the Monaco race weekend: “I honestly haven’t thought about that at all. I think we need to find out what’s wrong with this car first before we move on to the new car. “

“If we were to start with the new car now, it could go wrong quite easily. I think it’s about fully understanding this car first, which we still haven’t done, so we have a guideline,” Hamilton said.

With the technical regulations remaining stable for the 2023 season, teams will be able to use the experience gained from this season for next year. “But there are definitely a lot of things about this year’s car that I don’t want for next year,” said the seven-time Formula One world champion.
