Levante – Celta Vigo Preview: The Hosts Have Never Beaten Celta at Home

When Paco Lopez took charge of Levante back in early March, not only did he revive the team to safety, but he also turned them into winners. The winning spirit didn’t disappear over the summer, as Levante surprised everyone by defeating Real Betis 3-0 on the road to open the new 2018/19 season in style. Overall, the Valencia outfit has won nine of its last twelve LaLiga games under Lopez (W9, D1, L2), although one of those losses was inflicted by Celta Vigo in last season’s final fixture.

Celta is actually on a seven-game LaLiga winning streak against Levante. Considering the Andalusians always hang around the top 10 teams in the Spanish domestic championship, it’s easy to assume they’re the favourites. However, The Sky Blues have failed to win any of their last eight away LaLiga games (D1, L7) and have an abysmal 3:21 goal difference over that span.

The pre-season didn’t go smoothly under their new head coach Antonio Mohamed (no wins in five games) and they could only earn a draw at home versus Espanyol in the first round, so there are plenty of reasons for Levante to feel optimistic and motivated on Monday night.

Start Time

Monday, August 27

20:15 CET/GMT +2

Estadi Ciutat de València

Players to watch

Iago Aspas Celta Vigo

Iago Aspas and Maxi Gomez were nearly unstoppable last season, sharing a total of 39 goals between the two. They’re obviously Celta’s main threats tonight. Levante has two underrated strikers of their own in Marti Roger and Jose Morales. They were the two goalscorers at Betis and they were also the primary contributors during Levante’s pre-season.
