LEC Season Finals: G2 Esports qualifies for the Worlds

Even before the Grand Final, G2 Esports has a milestone to chalk up. The Berlin-based organisation qualified for the Worlds by beating Team BDS

The Season Finals of the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) are not only about glory and prestige. Four of the six participants have the chance to take part in the Worlds. First to third place will qualify directly, fourth place will go through to the Qualifying Series. The tournament is played in double elimination mode, in which both the MAD Lions and the Berlin organisation G2 Esports won the upper bracket. This means that both have made it directly to the Worlds.

Confident G2 returns the favour to Rocket League team

While MAD Lions triumphed 3-0 against Excel Esports, G2 took revenge on Team BDS for their defeat at the Rocket League Worlds (1-3). “You can definitely say we’re strong,” G2’s Steven ‘Hans Sama’ Liv said in an interview with the organiser after the match. “I thought BDS played pretty well; they were in a good mood today. Other teams have their strengths, but I think we’re the best so far.”

G2 Esports and Spanish outfit MAD Lions face each other in the Upper Bracket final in a fortnight’s time. That means both can only finish third in the worst-case scenario, which is why their place at Worlds is assured. SK Gaming, the second German organisation, will take part next week. The Cologne-based team will meet Team BDS in the lower bracket. Both SK Gaming and Fnatic, who complete the field of participants, qualified via the Championship Points. However, their rank only entitled them to start in the Lower Bracket.

For the winner of the Season Finals, there is not only a place in the World Championship, but also prize money of around 65,000 euros. The Worlds kick off on 10 October.
