In his first public appearance since announcing his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James has not yet revealed which team he will play for in the future. The 41-year-old did, however, hint that his decision is imminent.
About 5,000 spectators watched a live episode of James’ podcast “Mind the Game” at Fanatics Fest in New York. Guest host Tyrese Haliburton tried to coax an answer out of the superstar about his future shortly after the show began. James, however, deflected the question and made it clear that he would not be announcing his new team that evening.
A short time later, at CNBC’s “Game Plan Summit” and “Boardroom,” the four-time MVP offered at least a hint about the timeline. “I won’t keep you waiting much longer,” James announced. According to ESPN, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors, among others, remain in the running.
Haliburton had also tried to lure James to Indiana. The Pacers star reported that he had already sent the 41-year-old a message before his announced departure from Los Angeles, urging him to join forces. James reportedly responded with just two laughing emojis, after which Haliburton put his efforts on hold for the time being.
Will James even add a 25th season?
For James, this is the fourth free agency of his career and possibly his last major athletic decision. He explained that he wants to fit in with his new team while also contributing the experience he’s gained over 23 years in the NBA. In addition to a record-breaking 24th season, he apparently didn’t completely rule out a 25th year either.
His family plays a central role in this decision. James said his daughter Zhuri’s opinion was particularly important to him; he personally explained to her that he would be leaving the Lakers and might be separated from her more often in the future. The decision, therefore, concerns not only basketball but also the place where he will spend the final stage of his career.
James bid farewell to the Lakers with warm words. He thanked Jeanie Buss, the entire Buss family, Rob Pelinka, his coaches, and former teammates for their eight years together. Where he will continue his career remains to be seen—but James has already promised his fans: “It’s going to be pretty entertaining.”
