League of Legends: LEC before the Summer Split start

The MSI 2022 is over, the organisations back in their regions. The Summer Split kick-off is upon us. The League of Legends European Championship (LEC) starts in June

The big questions before the opening of the Summer Split 2022 in Berlin are: Who are the best European teams in LoL eSports? Who can secure a ticket to the upcoming World Championship in North America? And can G2 Esports once again deliver performances like at the MSI and take the title?

The summer tournament will open on 17 June with the duel between Team Vitality and MAD Lions. In total, the season will stretch over eight weeks. Only then will it be possible to answer the open questions. But one thing is certain: G2 is currently the clear favourite to win the tournament.

The participants in the Summer Split 2022

Although the team around mid-laner Rasmus Borregaard ‘caPs’ Winther lost out to T1 at the MSI, they were only eliminated in the semi-finals. G2 thus represented the LEC in a worthy manner and will certainly be received with respect in the domestic league. If the team of ambitious former eSports great Carlos ‘ocelote’ Rodriguez continues to show top form, G2 will pose the biggest challenge to the other organisations.

The reckoning on a tournament win should not be made without MAD, however. The current title holders will go all out to ensure that G2 does not win the Summer Split. Last summer, FC Schalke 04, a Bundesliga football team, was still represented at the LEC Summer Split. The team finished last before selling its starting place in the LoL league. Team BDS from Switzerland will start for them.

This is how the tournament in Berlin goes

The three best teams will get their ticket to the Worlds. In addition to the World Cup participation, the title and a trophy, there is also a prize pool of 200,000 euros at stake. A share of 80,000 euros will go to the winning organisation.

After the group phase, in which each team has to play 18 games in best-of-one mode, the play-offs will follow for the best six. From then on, the duels will be raised to best-of-five matches. Losers can make it to the final via the ‘lower bracket’ as usual.

For all fans, there is still the positive news that after 2021, spectators will be allowed to be on site again this year. Compared to last year, the teams will compete offline and are thus also back in the LEC Studio in Berlin.
