Laura Siegemund is out of the Rome Masters. The German number one was defeated by a former world number one.
Laura Siegemund, the last remaining German player at the Tennis Masters in Rome, has been eliminated.
Germany’s current number one lost 1-6, 4-6 in the third round to former world number one Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic) despite improving as the match progressed.
Siegemund puts up a brave fight
Siegemund, who reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year, lost the first set in a flash on Sunday evening.
After that, the 38-year-old found her rhythm, saving five match points at 3-5 in the second set to take the game. Nevertheless, Siegemund was ultimately defeated by the 2019 Rome champion.
Tennis: Lys Misses Out on Upset
In the second round of the clay-court tournament, Eva Lys had already missed out on an upset against four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka.
On Thursday, Tatjana Maria was also eliminated in the second round, while Tamara Korpatsch had been knocked out in the first round.
