Scorer Lamine Yamal suffered an injury to his left thigh in the 1-0 win against Vigo on Wednesday evening. FC Barcelona have now announced that the 18-year-old is out for the season.
Barcelona only released three short sentences about Yamal’s condition. “Investigations have revealed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has sustained an injury to his left thigh muscle. The player is being treated conservatively. Lamine Yamal will be out for the rest of the season, but should be ready for the World Cup.”
The 18-year-old will therefore miss the remaining games of the season, but he probably won’t have to worry about the World Cup. Spain’s first match will be against Cape Verde in Group H on June 15, and missing out would be a major setback for the 2024 European champions.
Yamal had converted a penalty he had taken himself in the 40th minute on Wednesday evening. Immediately afterwards, he grabbed his thigh and had to be substituted. “Lamine felt something, hopefully it’s not that bad,” said coach Hansi Flick after the match. The winger had already had to sit out several weeks last September due to a groin injury.
Barcelona don’t have many games left to play anyway. The final highlight of the season is the Clasico at the Camp Nou against Real Madrid on May 10. With six games remaining, Flick’s team currently have a nine-point lead over their eternal rivals from the Spanish capital. The Catalans were defeated by Atletico Madrid in both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
Yamal has appeared in 28 league games this season, scoring 16 goals and providing 12 assists. The attacker also impressed in the Champions League (six goals and four assists in ten games) and the Copa del Rey (two goals and two assists in five appearances) and was voted the best young player at Euro 2024. He has scored six goals in his 23 appearances for the Seleccion.
