Knee again: William will miss Wolfsburg again for months

William remains VfL Wolfsburg’s big unlucky player. The Brazilian suffered his third serious knee injury in a short space of time on Wednesday.

In its press release on Thursday, VfL wrote of a “serious injury in the right knee “ with which William will again be out “long-term”.

The 26-year-old right-back ruptured his cruciate ligament in February 2020 and May 2021 – the second time he was on loan from FC Schalke 04 – and has just fought his way back into the Wolfsburg side.

William was supposed to be in the starting eleven for the test match against Hansa Rostock on Wednesday (1:3), but had waved off after a “small incident” during the warm-up (coach Florian Kohfeldt). After an examination, he was given the green light and was substituted for the second half – a few minutes later, his knee buckled without the intervention of an opponent.

The Wolves left it open whether it was a cruciate ligament rupture for the third time. William played his last game in a VfL jersey so far on 9 January 2021.
