Klopp and “the only problem” with Bellingham

Jude Bellingham has long been considered a potential Liverpool professional of the future. Now Jürgen Klopp rules out a transfer – but only for the time being.

With the signings of right-back Calvin Ramsay (Aberdeen), midfield talent Fabio Carvalho (Fulham) and 75-million-euro attacker Darwin (Benfica), Liverpool FC have completed their plans in this year’s summer transfer market early. Further new arrivals are not expected – certainly not Jude Bellingham.

There have long been rumours about the England international in the service of Borussia Dortmund that he could one day wear the Reds’ jersey. Jürgen Klopp is a fan, and that the 19-year-old would fit in with his idea of football is obvious. But if anything, the two sides won’t go head-to-head for at least a year.

Klopp rules out further midfield addition – “but you never know “

“He’s not on the market, that’s the first problem with this player,” Klopp told English print media in Asia before leaving for the preparation tour. “Well, that’s also the only problem with this player!” Bellingham is still tied to BVB until 2025 and had made an early commitment to his employer, at least for the upcoming season.

He could generally say that Liverpool would not sign another midfielder this summer, Klopp added. “But you never know. If someone comes to you and says: ‘I want to leave’, we have to talk again.” But that has not happened so far, he added.

And the discussion that keeps flaring up, according to which Liverpool create too little goal threat from midfield and therefore have a need? “I don’t understand that,” Klopp rebuffed. “Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Milner, Keita, Jones, Elliott, Fabio Carvalho, Oxlade-Chamberlain. Now tell me what type of player we are missing! An attacking player who’s 6’5″ and heads the ball into the penalty area? Okay, apart from that!”
