The captain will watch the next two matches only as a spectator. The Bayern Munich player will not feature against Serbia or in Greece.
Captain Joshua Kimmich is leaving the German national football team with a heavy heart following a poor start under new national coach Jürgen Klopp. “I’d hoped to stay right up until the last minute and would, of course, have loved to stay. But I understand that the manager simply wants to get to know some other lads,” said Kimmich after the 0–1 (0–0) Nations League defeat to Greece in Augsburg.
Kimmich to miss the match against Serbia
Following the first two Nations League matches, Klopp has almost completely overhauled his squad; Kimmich, too, is being given a break, as previously announced. “That was the plan from the outset – that we have a large squad and that we’d rotate the players. So I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed from home,” said Kimmich, who will now miss his “home match” against Serbia in Munich on Thursday and the return leg in Greece (4 October).
He left open the question of whether he would be at the stadium. “I’m not quite sure yet,” he said, before heading home – with a heavy heart.
