The Skyliners are kicking off their preseason preparations without their new U.S. guard, Marcus Garrett. The Hessian club had actually declared its roster planning complete just a few hours earlier.
The Frankfurt Skyliners have parted ways with Marcus Garrett just a short time after signing him. The American guard had signed a one-year contract with the Frankfurt-based team just this past July. Now the club has announced that it “made the decision at the start of preseason training.” As recently as Thursday afternoon, the Skyliners had declared their roster planning complete with the signing of guard Judah Mintz, who is joining the team from Turkey.
Since Garrett’s contract was terminated effective immediately, “we will continue to look around the transfer market,” the Frankfurt club’s statement added. The Skyliners had already drawn attention in recent days with the signing of Ulm’s former championship-winning captain, Thomas Klepeisz, and had also retained another backcourt player in Nahiem Alleyne, who was already under contract last season.
It was already over after three days in Ludwigsburg
Garrett, too, had been introduced just about three weeks ago: Last season, the defensive specialist—who was named the NCAA’s top defender while playing for Kansas in 2020—had been in strong form. He celebrated a championship with the Greensboro Swarm in the NBA G-League. In 43 games, Garrett averaged 11.8 points, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals.
The 1.96-meter player also appeared in 16 NBA games for the Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets. During his first stint in Germany in the summer of 2023, he was also released by the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg. At that time, the Ludwigsburg-based team pulled the plug after just three days. He is said to have been in poor physical condition at the time; according to media reports, he also had problems with, among other things, the bus trips and the marijuana ban in Germany at the time. However, it is still unknown why Garrett’s contract was terminated in Frankfurt as well.
