Junuzovic to leave Red Bull Salzburg in summer

Routing midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic will leave serial champions Red Bull Salzburg after the end of the season. The 34-year-old’s contract will not be renewed

Series champions Red Bull Salzburg and Zlatko Junuzovic will go their separate ways from the summer. The Mozartstadt side announced on Thursday that the 34-year-old midfielder’s expiring contract will not be renewed. “Of course I regret this decision because I love being here in Salzburg and had a great, successful time,” Junuzovic expressed his disappointment. “But it is what it is and I not only look back positively on my years at FC Red Bull Salzburg, I also look positively to the future.” Where his path will take him after the end of the season, he said, he does not yet know.

Junuzovic joined Salzburg in the summer of 2018 after a total of six and a half years at Werder Bremen and has since played 113 competitive games for the “Bullen”. However, he has only made five appearances this season – partly due to a long-term heel injury – and was mostly absent from coach Matthias Jaissle’s squad after his recovery.

“For us, it was anything but an easy decision. But we discussed it internally for a long time and in detail and ultimately came to the conclusion that we would not extend the contract. For reasons of fairness, we informed him of this decision early on in order to give him enough time to reorient himself,” explained Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund. “Sladdi’ never let himself down even in the last few months, which were difficult for him, and did everything to get a grip on his injury. I hope that he will soon be back to his old self and that we can find a perfect ending together with him and celebrate two more titles. “
