Following the brawl scandal in the Judo Bundesliga, Georgian Akaki Japaridse faces legal consequences. As the Leipzig police confirmed to SID, a complaint has been filed against the 24-year-old from the JC Leipzig team, and an investigation into the alleged assault is underway. The police are aware of the suspect’s identity and have a video of the incident.
On the final day of competition in the Judo Bundesliga, during Saturday’s match against serial champion TSV Abensberg, Japaridse struck his opponent several times with his fist following a loss to German Olympic competitor Timo Cavelius. As the video in question shows, Cavelius had previously celebrated right in front of Japaridse, which the Georgian interpreted as a provocation and took as a reason to attack.
Cavelius lost two teeth and had to undergo surgery
Cavelius (29) lost two teeth and has already undergone surgery for a broken jaw. He will likely miss the World Championships in Baku this October. According to media reports, Japaridse has already left Germany for his home country, and the police were unable to locate him.
The German Judo Federation strongly condemned the incident and announced its intention to involve the international federations. Japaridze had placed fifth in March at the Grand Slam in the Georgian capital of Baku. However, he is only the sixth-ranked Georgian in the world rankings for the 90-kg weight class and is therefore unlikely to qualify for the World Championships.
