Newcastle United have remained true to their poor away form and have now also been knocked out of the League Cup. Following the 1–3 defeat at Everton FC, manager Matthias Jaissle voiced his criticism – and came to a surprising realisation.

Newcastle United have lost four of their last six competitive matches; the most recent, on Thursday evening, sealed their exit from the League Cup. The 1–3 defeat at Everton FC robbed the Magpies of a chance at the title – and frustrated manager Matthias Jaissle because of how it came about.

Individual errors allowed the opposition to score at will, and the visitors were already trailing 0–2 at half-time. “Just think of the first incident,” Jaissle remarked at the post-match press conference. A loss of possession in a “low-risk area” put Newcastle in trouble out of the blue. Jaissle found the second goal “hard to accept”, as there are “clear rules within the team on how to behave in such situations”.

Newcastle United remain true to their poor away form and have also bowed out of the League Cup. Following the 1–3 defeat at Everton FC, manager Matthias Jaissle voiced his criticism – and came to a surprising realisation.

Barry sealed the deal in the 69th minute with the 3–0 goal following yet another lapse by Dedic. Burns’ goal shortly before the final whistle was merely a consolation. “We’re naturally disappointed with the result,” Jaissle admitted later: “At the moment, it’s also a bit of a shock, because overall the match wasn’t all that bad, but it’s been the story of the season so far: in situations where it really counts, we lack the necessary clinical finishing.”

Newcastle, he added, had ultimately had “lots and lots of chances, including some big ones”. Jaissle reiterated: “That’s what makes the evening a bit of a shock when you look at the result and consider the overall picture. Regardless of the fact that we have a young team with a young squad, that was naive in those situations, and we need to get a grip on that quickly.”

“That’s no longer an excuse either”

This led the 38-year-old to a rather surprising realisation: “It’s shocking and also frustrating, and that’s probably why I need to shout more.” Generally speaking, his team is currently going through a “learning process”, which, given the nature of the business, must happen quickly.

“ “That’s no longer an excuse; it’s simply the course of events and the process we’re currently in,” said Jaissle: “But the fighting spirit and also the number of chances we created – I think there was definitely a noticeable improvement there.”

However, it was also further evidence of Newcastle’s glaring weakness away from home: the 1–3 defeat followed surprisingly heavy losses at Leeds United (1–4) and Premier League newcomers Coventry City (1–4).
