It’s great fun watching Leverkusen – only one question remains

Sascha Mölders (36) writes about the top match between Leverkusen and Bayern in his kicker column this time. And gives a tip.

Servus everyone, I wanted to get in touch again on the occasion of the top match in the Bundesliga. Some of you may know that I play for 1860 Munich. And that 1860 Munich traditionally has a great rivalry with FC Bayern. Although I come from the Ruhr area, I still feel this rivalry in the city, of course, even if the clubs are in different circles at the moment.

I speak openly about every club anyway, I don’t have any problems with that. Whether it’s Bayern or Bayreuth. Of course, it would be nice if I were to sit in front of the TV on a Saturday afternoon, turn on the Bundesliga conference and watch Sechzig play Bayern. I think that’s what all of Munich would like.

Until then, let’s talk about Bayern against Leverkusen. The almighty FCB lost a competitive match for the first time under Julian Nagelsmann before the international break. Crisis!? Fun. At some point you just lose. Frankfurt did well in Munich, but all in all Bayern can be satisfied. Nagelsmann is doing a lot right so far.

Seoane has formed a unit out of many talented kickers

What Bayern has and always had: the brutal quality of the individual players. That makes it more and more difficult, but, and this is not only true for Frankfurt last time or Leverkusen now, in one game you can beat anyone. That sounds banal, but that’s the way it is. Of course, Bayern Munich is almost always the big favourite.

This will be a very exciting top match. Leverkusen can hurt Bayern with their enormous pace up front. I wouldn’t single out Florian Wirtz there for once. I have the feeling that Gerardo Seoane has formed a really strong Bayer team. Everyone looks at the person next to them to see how they can help them. It’s great fun to watch Leverkusen play football.

Now it’s just a matter of confirming that for Seoane and Co. over two halves of the season. We all know that Leverkusen in particular have only very rarely managed to do that in recent years. Every team, whether it’s in the first, second or third league, will have a slump at some point, and it rarely goes away. Bayern have also had their problems in recent years, for example in the autumn. The question is, how do you get out of it again?

I think Leverkusen will win

Leverkusen have failed to bounce back from these lows in the past, but I do believe that this year will be different and Bayer will play a good role until the end of the season.

I still remember the game between Leverkusen and Bayern last year just before Christmas, when Jonathan Tah made the mistake just before the end and Bayern still won 2-1. That was very typical, but you also saw how close Leverkusen were. I trust them to beat Bayern this time. And that’s my prediction – 2:1 for Leverkusen.

Sascha Mölders (36) has played 103 Bundesliga games for Augsburg and Duisburg and, as captain of TSV 1860 München, is fighting for a return to the 2nd division.
