Italy and star Sinner celebrate the Davis Cup title

Jannik Sinner shines and crowns a strong tennis season with the Davis Cup triumph. It’s a historic title for Italy

Lead by Jannik Sinner, Italy has celebrated its first Davis Cup triumph in 47 years. In the final of the prestigious team competition, the 22-year-old South Tyrolean won the decisive second point against Australia.

In an impressive 6:3, 6:0 win over Alex de Minaur, the world number four confirmed his world class in Malaga. Earlier, Sinner’s team-mate Matteo Arnaldi won 7:5, 2:6, 6:4 against Australian Alexei Popyrin and thus took the first step towards the Italians’ second Davis Cup title. Italy had only previously won the Davis Cup in 1976.

Sinner crowns strong season

Sinner thus crowned a personally strong season and an outstanding end-of-year spurt. In the semi-finals of the Davis Cup, he had spoiled Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic’s hopes of reaching the final. Sinner first defeated the record Grand Slam winner after fending off match points in the singles and then also in the doubles to clinch the decisive victory against Serbia. Sinner had lost the final against Djokovic at the ATP Finals the previous week.
