Italian FA overturns points deduction against Ribery club

The Italian Football Appeals Court has handed down a ruling in favour of Serie A bottom side Salernitana. Udinese is also affected by the judge’s ruling.

The Court of Appeal of the Italian federation FIGC has overturned the points deduction for lantern carriers Salerno. The club, who also have Franck Ribery in their squad, had been deducted three points for not travelling to Udine for their league match on 21 December due to numerous corona cases. Salernitana had been banned from travelling by the local health authorities.

The league, however, had refused to postpone the match, arguing that the club still had enough players in the squad. A sports judge had subsequently rejected an appeal by Salernitana. The match was assessed as 0:3 in favour of Salernitana.

One point deduction on top

In addition, there was a point deduction for Salernitana for not showing up. The Court of Appeal took a different view of the situation and upheld Salernitana’s appeal. The match against Udinese is now to be made up.

The bottom team now has 13 points instead of 12 after 23 games. Udine now have three points less and have dropped one place to 15th in the table with 24 points (this is how the table looks at the moment).

Dismissal of coach – is Pirlo coming?

On Monday evening, Salernitana fired their coach Stefano Colantuono. Fabio Liverani, who most recently coached Parma Calcio, and Claudio Ranieri, who is without a club, are considered candidates to succeed him. Ex-Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo is also considered a candidate. Salernitana had been acquired in January by entrepreneur Danilo Iervolino, who is now in office as president of the southern Italian club.
