Isco scores against former club: Real Madrid lose at Betis

Real Madrid have made a major slip-up in the race for the league title. Despite taking the lead, the Whites lost to Betis in Seville on Saturday evening. Former Madrid player Isco scored the winning goal from the spot.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was able to count on Mbappé again after the victory in the cup at Real Sociedad (1-0), who returned after dental surgery. The Frenchman played in offense together with the Brazilians Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo. Alaba was allowed to play in defense, while Modric was given preference over Camavinga in midfield.

Real dream, Betis via a set piece

The first half did not produce a large number of chances. The first highlight was set by the guests from Madrid: Mbappé’s dream pass into the box from the left was crossed by Mendy – and Brahim Diaz only had to finish into the empty net (10′).

Otherwise, things were rather quiet in both penalty areas, with both teams showing respect for each other. Betis had an extremely difficult time going forward – and then celebrated after a set piece: Isco’s corner ended up with Johnny, who was too free, and he nodded in from close range to make it 1-1 at half-time (34′).

Isco annoys the ex-club

After the break, it started off lively. The first highlight this time was set by the hosts: Rüdiger could only stop Rodriguez in his own penalty area with a foul. Isco converted the penalty against his ex-club (active for the Royals from 2013 to 2022). Real had a hard time offensively and were lucky not to trail 1-3 when Cucho Hernandez shot wide (67′).

Real Madrid played poorly in the second half and had no ideas in offense. The hosts had no trouble defending their lead and celebrated a home win against the Royal Madrid, who lost ground in the championship race.
