Divock Origi has announced his retirement at the age of just 31. He made his mark at Liverpool FC with a goal.
He was rarely a regular starter during his career, but he still left his mark on the biggest stage. Now, at just 31 years old, Divock Origi has announced the end of his playing career. He has “fulfilled his destiny as a player,” the Belgian wrote on social media on Monday. “I have lived out my childhood dream of playing on the biggest stages and winning the biggest trophies. I am grateful to God for all of this.”
Last competitive match over two years ago
Origi was most recently under contract with AC Milan, but had fallen completely out of favor there and, since a loan to Nottingham Forest in 2023/24, had been training mainly with the Italian club’s reserve team. Last December, his contract was terminated six months before it was set to expire. Origi played his last competitive match over two years ago for Nottingham Forest; his most recent appearance for Milan came in May 2023.
Origi spent the majority of his career at Liverpool FC, which signed him from Lille in 2014. Under Jürgen Klopp, the burly forward mostly played the role of a super-sub, but he will likely be remembered forever by Reds fans for three goals: In the second leg of the 2018/19 Champions League semifinals, the Reds sensationally defeated FC Barcelona 4-0 after a 3-0 first-leg loss—thanks in part to two goals from Origi. Above all, the decisive goal to make it 4-0 following a quickly taken corner by Trent Alexander-Arnold made the Belgian a legend in Liverpool.
In the subsequent final victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Origi once again etched his name into LFC history, scoring the goal that sealed the 2-0 final score as a substitute. The following season, Origi won the Premier League title with Liverpool, and in 2022 he won the FA Cup. The Belgian had spent the 2017–18 season on loan at VfL Wolfsburg, scoring six goals in 31 Bundesliga matches. He made 32 appearances for the Belgian national team and participated in the 2014 World Cup.
“To my fans all over the world who helped me shine: Every iconic moment, every goal, every piece of history we wrote together will belong to us forever,” Origi wrote: “To every club and to all the coaches and teammates who stood by my side: Thank you. You have shaped me in ways that go far beyond the pitch.”
