Immobile drops out against Switzerland

Ahead of the decisive qualifying match against Switzerland, Italy have suffered a major setback: Ciro Immobile drops out.

Switzerland and Italy are tied on 14 points in qualifying Group C, but the Azzurri are in first place on goal difference, which is two goals better than their opponents, and they can almost clinch their World Cup ticket if they win a direct clash with the Swiss on Friday.

However, the European champions will have to do without Immobile. The 31-year-old, who has scored ten league goals for Lazio this season and leads the Serie A scoring charts, left the training camp in Coverciano near Florence on Tuesday because of a calf injury. This was announced by the Italian Football Federation FIGC on Tuesday. Gianluca Scamacca of Sassuolo was named as a substitute.
