The world number three continues his preparations for the grass court Grand Slam in Halle.
Alexander Zverev didn’t want to dwell on his final defeat in Stuttgart against his nemesis Taylor Fritz (3:6, 6:7). “I got everything out of the week,” said the tennis pro, who started his preparations for the grass court highlight at Wimbledon (starting June 30) at the ATP tournament in Weissenhof and will now continue them in Halle.
The Stuttgart crowd already showed their support for his first Grand Slam title: “Sascha, Wimbledon!” shouted one fan, reminding Germany’s best tennis player that there are bigger matches than the final of a 250-series tournament. Zverev replied: “Don’t worry, I’ll win Wimbledon.” When asked about his statement at the award ceremony, the Hamburg native simply replied at the press conference: “Why not?”
Zverev jokes with fan
On Sunday, Zverev had already suffered his fifth consecutive defeat against Taylor Fritz. He said, “Of course, it’s never nice to lose a final, but I’ve been playing on grass for five days now and I think it’s been a very positive week.” He will take that with him to Halle, where his next chance to win the first grass court title of his career awaits.
Not wanting to dwell on the defeat, he quickly headed for East Westphalia, with his plane scheduled to take off just 30 minutes after the press conference. In the first round of the 500-series tournament in Westphalia, he will face Marcos Giron (USA). World number one Jannik Sinner (Italy) will also be in action in the dress rehearsal for Wimbledon.
