Following his surgery, Jamal Musiala is not yet available to FC Bayern. However, it shouldn’t be too long before he returns to training.
For Jamal Musiala, 366 days passed between the serious injury he sustained in the Club World Cup quarterfinal against Paris (0–2) and what is likely to be his final surgery as a result of that injury. After Germany’s early exit from the World Cup, the dribbling maestro decided to have the plate in his foot—which would have had to be removed eventually anyway—taken out already.
As a result, while he’ll miss the start of Bayern Munich’s preseason training, which began on Monday, in the best-case scenario he’ll no longer have any long-term issues with the foot that affected his entire previous season. Musiala had to fight long and hard for his return to the team, then dealt with lingering issues and had to sit out again. And he never really found his stride leading up to the World Cup either.
Although his vacation was somewhat affected by the surgery, Musiala himself made the decision to take action now rather than possibly going under the knife during the winter break and then having to sit out afterward.
After consulting with coach Vincent Kompany, Musiala’s vacation was therefore extended by a few days, while the other German national team players will join the training camp at Tegernsee next week and will also be on board when the German record champions’ reduced squad flies to South Korea on August 1 and then on to Hong Kong.
Musiala will follow his rehabilitation program at Säbener Straße, where he arrived for treatment for the first time on Tuesday, and will now have a few more days to catch his breath before resuming training on July 31.
Musiala’s Plan: To Play in the Super Cup Against Dortmund
Bayern’s No. 10 will be joined—as has been the case for the most part recently—by Alphonso Davies, among others, whose World Cup was extremely disappointing due to a thigh injury. New signing Ismael Saibari, who suffered an early thigh injury during Morocco’s 3-0 victory over Canada in the Round of 16, will not be traveling to either training camp and is training in Munich.
If everything goes according to plan, Musiala will rejoin training after the team’s return on August 8; the 23-year-old definitely has his sights set on the start of the competitive season. On August 22, Bayern will face runner-up Borussia Dortmund in the Super Cup, and a week later, the league season kicks off against Stuttgart.
