Helmut Marko: “Always happy when Sainz wins and not Leclerc!”

Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko is happy that Carlos Sainz and not Charles Leclerc won the 2022 Formula 1 race in Great Britain

Carlos Sainz finally claimed his first Formula One Grand Prix victory at the 150th attempt. The Ferrari driver triumphed in the chaos of Great Britain, while his teammate Charles Leclerc only finished fourth after another botched Ferrari strategy

On the ServusTV programme Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar-7, Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko spoke about the situation at the Scuderia and was also asked about Sainz’s performance.

The Spaniard was brought up in Red Bull’s junior squad at the start of his career before leaving Toro Rosso [now AlphaTauri] for Renault at the end of 2017 due to a lack of opportunities for a cockpit with the Red Bull team, meaning he was no longer a Red Bull junior either.

“I was happy for him,” Marko said. “I’m always happy when he wins and not Leclerc, it’s quite clear. So we’re sporting there,” he adds with a grin. This statement gives a deep insight into which of the two Ferrari drivers Red Bull considers more dangerous to Max Verstappen in the world championship battle.

In addition, Marko says that Leclerc’s spirited defensive actions at the end of the race against Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez may have cost Red Bull the win: “I was annoyed that Leclerc fought like that with his hard and older tyres, because we had a chance to win with Perez.”

“We had the fastest car at the time, but in the battle first with Hamilton and then especially with Leclerc, we lost time and that’s when Sainz got the advantage that allowed him to win,” the motorsport consultant analysed.
