Megastar John Cena’s farewell match against Austrian phenomenon Gunther will be available live and free of charge in Germany.
All German WWE fans can rejoice at this news: Megastar John Cena’s farewell match against Austrian ring phenomenon Gunther will be broadcast live and free of charge in Germany.
As WWE announced on Thursday, the league will stream the match on its official YouTube channel. As always, the entire event, under the traditional label Saturday Night’s Main Event, will be available on the paid portal WWE Network. The show in Washington starts at 2 a.m. German time on Sunday night. Usually, “SNME” starts with the most important match – in this case, clearly Cena vs. Gunther.
WWE: John Cena vs. Gunther approaches
Walter Hahn, as Gunther is actually called, has been under contract with WWE since 2019 and has been active in the main squad since 2022. With his physically intense, credible style and special aura, the 38-year-old has established himself as a phenomenon and figurehead of the new era under chief executive “Triple H” Paul Levesque.
The 1.93-meter man can already look back on some major, sometimes historic achievements: a record 666-day reign as Intercontinental Champion was followed by winning the King of the Ring tournament and two reigns as World Champion. This year, Gunther also faced the legendary Bill Goldberg in his last match.
A victory would be logical
Before the tournament began, Gunther had disappeared from the scene for several months. He had been taking a break since losing his World Title to CM Punk at SummerSlam on August 2—who was then immediately dethroned by Seth Rollins.
Gunther is considered the favorite in the upcoming giant duel with Cena: It is usually the logic of a farewell match that the departing star loses in order to give momentum to the new generation. Considering that Cena is leaving as a record champion (17 times) and one of the biggest stars in the history of the league, the honor would be all the more significant for Gunther.
A victory over Cena in his last match would underscore and cement Gunther’s rank among the absolute top stars more clearly than ever. It would also be the biggest possible boost for the WrestleMania season, which is about to begin.
