Glasner’s powerful “apple” announcement to the Palace bosses

In addition to Alexander Isak, Liverpool FC also wants to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi on Monday. For his coach Oliver Glasner, that is out of the question.

Oliver Glasner has already made his mark at Crystal Palace with the FA Cup triumph. And so, on Sunday evening, the popular Austrian dared to go public with a statement to his bosses that could not have been more clear. Glasner is vehemently opposed to the last-minute sale of his captain Marc Guehi, whom Liverpool FC is desperate to sign at the eleventh hour.

“We have to keep Marc if we want to have a successful season,” the successful coach made clear after the 3-0 away win at Aston Villa. “We had a meeting in March and agreed that we would only sell Marc if we found a suitable replacement. But there is no suitable replacement, so it’s clear that part of the agreement has not been fulfilled.”

“We wanted a replacement by July 1, now it’s August 31.”

The problem: Guehi is only under contract until summer 2026 and is reportedly unwilling to extend it. At the same time, Palace officials do not want to lose him on a free transfer. “We wanted a replacement by July 1, now it’s August 31 and we don’t have one,” Glasner added on the BBC. “He’s one of our key players, our captain.”

Glasner doesn’t believe Guehi will become a problem if he is denied his hoped-for move to the champions. “I know he would accept it because he loves Crystal Palace. This is about Palace’s future, about this season. We’re having such a great time, perhaps the most successful in the club’s history. And Marc is not just a small piece of the puzzle.“

Glasner knows that the final decision is not his to make and that the money from Liverpool – Palace recently rejected an offer of around €40 million, according to media reports – is difficult to turn down less than a year before the contract expires. ”You know the story of Adam and Eve and the apple, right? The whole situation is tempting. But if we want to take the next steps, we have to keep him.”

Guehi shone again on Sunday

With Eberechi Eze moving to Arsenal for around €70 million, Glasner has already lost a key player this summer. Guehi proved that he is also one of those players on Sunday in what may have been his last appearance in a Palace shirt, when he not only helped Villa remain goalless in their third game of the season, but also scored a dream curling shot to make it 2-0. The fans celebrated him with chants.
