Ginter to leave Gladbach in summer

It’s out now: Matthias Ginter will leave Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer in the summer.

On Tuesday evening, the international commented on his future on Instagram. “After long deliberations I have decided not to extend my contract, which expires in the summer,” Ginter let it be known. “After five great years at Borussia Mönchengladbach, it is very difficult for me to take this step, but I have decided to take another path in my career for my personal and professional development.”

Most recently, there was even talk of a move in the winter, although Ginter had indicated that he would at least stay until the summer. Even an extension seemed possible and negotiations with the club were planned around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Apparently, both parties did not find a common denominator. Moreover, the sporting prospects in Gladbach are not particularly rosy at the moment. After the first half of the season, coach Adi Hütter’s team is currently only in a disappointing 14th place.

Eberl gets the clarity he demands

Sport director Max Eberl had demanded decisions from his players recently. “I told the boys in no uncertain terms that I want everything that has nothing to do with Borussia and the second half of the season to be clarified by the end of this year.” Now he has certainty in at least one case. Denis Zakaria’s contract also expires in the summer.

Ginter came to Gladbach from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 and has played 165 games (ten goals) since then. As the 27-year-old’s contract expires, the Foals will also not receive a transfer fee for the defender.

“I owe Borussia a lot and will always carry the club and the great fans in my heart. Now we’re going full steam ahead into the second half of the season. Those who know me know that I will give everything to achieve the goals that are still possible this season together,” the statement continues.
