Giants Beat Padres 5-3 as Trade Deadline Looms

A lot of changes were expected in the lead up to the game between Giants and Padres and the expectations turned out to be right. Joe Panik made his return from rehab assignment coming into the active roster along with Kelby Tomlinson.

The Giants won 5-3 following a Hernandez home run in the 12th but more changes to the roster could take place before the deadline. Johnny Cueto has been placed on the DL with a disabled elbow that may need surgery. Tomlinson has been optioned four times already since 1 June, so injuries are mounting up at the Giants. The deadline day means that there could be some changes coming at the Giants, although manager Bruce Bochy insisted he had not heard players talking about it.

Derek Holland, on the other hand, was quoted as saying after his two-run, five-inning effort: “We’re playing every game like it’s our last. There are a lot of great dudes on this team. We don’t want to lose. We don’t want to turn this into sell mode. I’m not going to act like we don’t pay attention to it.”

Sources close to the Giants have said the front office is trying to add players and hinted that a starting pitcher and an outfielder could be on their way to the Giants.

Other MLB trade rumors and news

Chris Archer

Other trade rumors include the possibility of Chris Archer joining the Padres, although it is thought that Tampa Bay are not in a hurry to let him leave. Other big names linked with moves before the deadline include Will Smith, Sam Dyson and Andrew McCutchen, who has been linked with several teams. Pirates have just announced that Keone Kela is joining them.

The clock is ticking for the deals to be agreed so we might see some big roster changes in the next 24 hours!
