German Tennis Star Out Right Away

After Jule Niemeier, Tamara Korpatsch also fails in her comeback on the WTA Tour in China right from the start

After Jule Niemeier (Dortmund), Tamara Korpatsch also failed to make her WTA Tour comeback in China right from the start.

The Hamburg player lost to local hero Yuan Yue 3:6, 6:7 (5:7) in Guangzhou. On Tuesday, Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau/No. 3) and Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied), two other German tennis professionals, will fight for a place in the last 16 of the tournament, which is endowed with 259,303 dollars.

Niemeier lost to Harriet Dart of Great Britain in Guangzhou on Monday (3:6, 2:6). This is the first of seven WTA tournaments to be held in China this year.

The WTA had withdrawn from the country in protest at its handling of former tennis player Peng Shuai, who disappeared from the public eye for several weeks after allegations of abuse against a high-ranking politician. In April, the players’ organisation lifted her ban.

Next up in China is Ningbo next week, followed by one of the biggest tournaments this autumn in Beijing.
