German tennis gem clearly outclassed

The 17-year-old recently attracted attention in Munich.

The ATP tournament in Hamburg is over in a flash for tennis talent Diego Dedura. The 17-year-old from Berlin, who had received a wild card from the organizers at Rothenbaum, lost in the first round to the Italian Luciano Darderi, who is six years his senior, 1-6, 4-6 after 70 minutes.

Dedura, ranked 374th in the world, who had reached the round of 16 at the tournament in Munich in mid-April, was clearly inferior to the 46th-ranked player for long stretches of the match. Only in the early stages of the second set did the youngster show himself to be on par with his opponent.

Four other Germans are competing in Hamburg, the last test before the French Open in Paris (starting next Sunday) – led by local hero Alexander Zverev, who registered late after his quarter-final exit in Rome. The Tokyo Olympic champion’s opponent in the first round is US qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic.

In addition, veteran Jan-Lennard Struff and talented Justin Engel will face each other in a duel between two wild card holders in the first round, while Daniel Altmaier will take on sixth-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
