German tennis ace misses out on next Grand Slam title

For the second time, Laura Siegemund wanted to secure the doubles title at the US Open. But she lost in the final

Laura Siegemund missed out on her second doubles title at the US Open. The 35-year-old Swabian and her partner Vera Swonareva lost 6-7 (9-11), 3-6 to Gabriela Dabrowski from Canada and Erin Routliffe from New Zealand in the final of the Grand Slam tournament in New York on Sunday.

Siegemund celebrated her only Grand Slam title in doubles with Swonarewa three years ago in New York – at that time under Corona conditions without spectators. For their participation in the final, the duo could look forward to prize money totalling 350,000 US dollars (327,210 euros).

Enger first set

In a tight first set, neither doubles team dropped serve at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Siegemund and Swonarewa were closer to a break but failed to convert a total of five chances. In the tie-break, they came back from 4-0 down, missed two set points and lost the set after Siegemund missed an overhead. In the second set, the German-Russian duo was quickly down 0:3 and Siegemund had to have treatment on her back. After a total of 2:15 hours, it was not enough for a comeback.

Dabrowski and Routliffe were playing only their fourth tournament together, for both it was their first Grand Slam title in doubles. Siegemund had already won in New York in 2016 in the mixed with Croatian Mate Pavic.

Siegemund: “Of course it feels good “

Just under a fortnight ago, she had lost her opening match in the singles competition to Coco Gauff, who later won the tournament, in three sets. Afterwards, she had complained about the behaviour of the spectators, who had booed her at times in her duel with the American crowd favourite.

“After that, several people came up to me every day, some of them from the players’ circles or coaches and also fans, who told me mega positively: ‘I thought your match was awesome or I thought your press conference was awesome’,” Siegemund reported. “That’s good, of course. “
