German duel in Montreal turns into a battle in the heat

The two top German players, Siegemund and Maria, faced each other at the tennis tournament in Montreal. It was a fierce duel.

Wimbledon quarter-finalist Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) reached the second round of the Masters tournament in Montreal, Canada, in a fierce battle between the two best German tennis players. The 37-year-old defeated Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) on Monday in a three-and-a-half-hour battle in the heat and slice, 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-2). She thus earned herself a Wimbledon rematch against Australian Open winner Madison Keys from the USA.

Eva Lys is also through to the second round after withdrawing from Hamburg due to a flare-up of rheumatism, beating France’s Leolia Jeanjean 6-1, 6-4.

Siegemund, ranked 54th in the world, won a close first set against Maria (ranked 41st) in front of a small crowd, showing strong nerves, thanks in particular to significantly more winners and a much better first serve percentage. She lost the second set in the hot midday sun on the blue hard court after four match points, but in the third she managed to win despite considerable serving problems. Siegemund came to the net more than a hundred times in total. At Wimbledon, she had surprisingly defeated Keys in the round of 32 with a clear 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Maria (37), on the other hand, had sensationally won the preparatory tournament at London’s Queen’s Club, but was eliminated in the first round at Wimbledon. Most recently, the German number one also failed to get past the first hurdle in Washington.
