Füllkrug relieved: “Like a diamond in the rough”

SV Werder Bremen celebrated a rousing away win in Nuremberg on Friday evening, in which the visitors showed morale above all. Coach Markus Anfang, ex-Nürnberg player Niclas Füllkrug and winning goal scorer Leonardo Bittencourt stepped up to the mic after the game.

Werder coach Markus Anfang saw a “crazy game” from his team in the floodlit duel at the Max Morlock Stadium, which “played excellently going forward”. However, the Green-Whites were trailing for more than 60 minutes, as Nuremberg “took the first chance with a vengeance”, as the coach analysed on Sky. For a long time, the guests gritted their teeth against Nuremberg’s goalkeeper Christian Mathenia, who “saved almost everything”. “We should have been 2-0 up before the first goal, but in the end we deserved to win the game,” Anfang summed up.

We are now unbeaten for three games, even if it sounds stupid.

Decisive in the away win was Niclas Füllkrug, who was given a mental break in mid-October and came back on in Nuremberg alongside fellow striker Ducksch. The 1:1 scorer explained that the victory was “exactly what we needed. We’re a bit of a diamond in the rough and still need the confidence in the second division.” The attacker echoed his coach’s conclusion, seeing a “great game where we actually didn’t allow anything at the start. The win gives value to the last two draws because we were able to make a leap forward. We are now unbeaten for three games, even if it sounds stupid,” the Bremen captain noted with a smile on his face.

Leonardo Bittencourt, who scored the winning goal, did not lose his smile either. The joker was substituted in the 63rd minute of the match and scored the goal of the day. The 27-year-old is “stumbling his way in” right now and therefore hopes to play a role in the rest of the season.

The victorious SVW will get some rest for the international break. After that, the next big game awaits with a home match against Schalke on Saturday 20 November.
