From the start of the second half of the season: return of ghost games looms

German sport, including the Bundesliga, is threatened with the return of ghost games from 28 December.

The potential return of the ghost games emerges from the draft resolution for the federal-state meeting on Tuesday, which is available to the Sport-Informations-Dienst (SID). According to the draft, “supra-regional sporting, cultural and comparable major events” are to be held again without spectators at the latest from 28 December.

Federal-Länder Round on Tuesday

On Tuesday, the federal and state governments will discuss concrete measures in a summit meeting scheduled at short notice. In a first version of the draft resolution, there was still talk of upper limits for participants.

The second half of the Bundesliga begins on 7 January (Bayern against Gladbach), the 2nd Bundesliga starts again from 14 January, parallel to the 3rd Liga.

End of the first half of the season with a maximum of 15,000 spectators

At present, up to 15,000 people are still allowed into the stadiums in some federal states.

For example, at the end of the first half of the season, the stadiums in Cologne and Frankfurt were filled with 15,000 spectators, in Bochum 13,799 spectators watched the VfL duel with Union Berlin. In the capital, 5,000 spectators were at Berlin’s Olympiastadion for Herthan’s clash with BVB. Already without spectators were the games in Bavaria (Munich, Fürth) and Saxony (Leipzig), and 750 spectators were present at the game in Sinsheim and Freiburg (Baden-Württemberg).

The DFL relies on close monitoring and the urgent recommendation for booster vaccination. “The Sports Medicine/Special Match Operations Task Force is of course permanently analysing, this also applies with regard to the Omikron variant,” the DFL announced in response to an SID enquiry.
