From the pad to the Olimpico: FIFA 21 sensation Provstgaard set to join Lazio

Oliver Provstgaard sensationally won the eChampions League in FIFA 21. Now he wants to break into the real premier league – the Dane is set to join Lazio Rome.

Admittedly, the name Oliver Provstgaard is not necessarily familiar to most eSports enthusiasts at first. Why should it be? A glance at his CV does not suggest that the 21-year-old could be anything other than the talented Danish central defender that he undoubtedly is on the real pitch.

Provstgaard already in Rome

First steps at Bredballe IF, a move to the Vejle BK youth team, professional debut in 2022 and since then a descent, re-ascent and personal step to become captain of the club from Syddanmark and the Danish U-21 selection. This is how the football career of the Copenhagen-born player can be summarized so far. He landed in Rome on Sunday evening to complete the obligatory medical check.

2021 But even before he made his debut for Vejle at the age of 18, the tall defensive specialist demonstrated very different qualities. In the eChampions League, the virtual eSport counterpart to the premier class, he delivered a truly fabulous performance: as the absolute underdog, without a contract with an eSport organization, without sponsors and without having previously made a name for himself in the professional FIFA scene, he wrote one of the greatest fairy tales in the eSport cosmos around EA SPORTS’ football simulation.

Danish Dynamite in the style of a shooting star

He sensationally won the $75,000 title at the online event, beating several prominent names along the way. For example, today’s FUTWIZ pro Ethan Higgins had to admit defeat in the semi-finals.

Then, in the final, Provstgaard also defeated Raffaele Cacciapuoti, who was then playing for AC Monza. He had already beaten two other prominent competitors, Mert Altintop, who took part in the 2024 eEuro, and eCL regular Lucio Vecchione.

The first highlight of a promising career? Not at all. At least not in eSports. Because as if the Dane’s daring feat had not been remarkable enough in itself, it remained the first and only professional FIFA tournament in which Provstgaard was to take part. Although he tried his hand here and there in qualifiers, priority was given to real sport.

A focus that now seems to be paying off. With the Biancocelesti, the 21-year-old is joining the team currently ranked sixth in the Seria A. In the Roman jersey, Provstgaard could follow up his Champions League triumph with a debut in the virtual premier league in the coming season.

Lazio are currently one point off the CL places. However, Marco Baroni’s team can reclaim such a place as early as Monday evening. From 8:45 p.m., the Laziali will be guests at relegation-threatened Cagliari.
